The Loibl Pass was always an important path over the mountains, even as early as in roman ages the pass was well frequented. To make the way to the harbor of Trieste faster, the road was rebuild over 20 years at the end of the medieval age, when a 150m long tunnel was build on the top, for the time a extremely long tunnel. In the 17th century, the tunnel was removed and the resulting groove was then used for the new path. In memory of this, two massive obelisk were erected right on the border line. In 1967, the new Loibl-Tunnel was open for the public, and the old pass over the mountain was closed for cars. But people still can walk cross the border.
