Maria am Stein, also known as “Deutsche Kirche”, was build in 1692 and is since that the highest mountain church in Europe, located at 2150m/7050 feet. The church was build both by farmers and mineworker in that area. Legend has it that the Virgin Mother helped a shepherd in need, sitting on a stone with a shepards staff in her hands. In commemoration of this the chuch was build.
